MIT faculty co-leads of the Jameel Clinic, Regina Barzilay and James Collins, have been awarded the 2026 Pritzker Prize for AI in Science Research Excellence by the University of Chicago and Caltech. The prize recognizes their integration of deep learning, bioengineering, and wet-lab validation to accelerate antibiotic discovery against drug-resistant pathogens.

From Halicin to Abaucin: AI Compresses Discovery Timelines

Their 2020 breakthrough identified halicin, the first AI-discovered antibiotic, using a model trained on just 2,500 molecules. The compound proved effective against superbugs including Clostridium difficile, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. A process that historically required years was completed in weeks. In 2023, the team followed with abaucin, a narrow-spectrum agent targeting A. baumannii while sparing beneficial gut flora.

Collins notes that generative AI is replacing laborious trial-and-error screening with rapid, predictive candidate generation. This shift directly addresses the global antimicrobial resistance crisis, where new drug pipelines have run dry.

Why It Matters for GPU / AI Infrastructure

Training and deploying molecular property predictors at this scale demands massive parallel compute. The iterative loop of model training, virtual screening, and experimental feedback requires on-demand GPU clusters with high memory bandwidth and low-latency interconnects — exactly the infrastructure profile that specialized AI clouds like AiGpu are built to deliver.
