Google's AI Search Growth Slows as Monetization Lags Behind Infrastructure Spend
Alphabet's Q3 results show search queries surging but ad revenue growth decelerating, raising questions about the return on massive AI infrastructure investment.

Alphabet reported that total search queries grew at their fastest pace in five years during the third quarter, yet search‑related revenue rose only 12 % year‑over‑year, down from 17 % in the prior quarter. Paid‑click growth slipped to 8 % from 13 %, indicating that the extra traffic is not converting into proportional ad income.
Chief Business Officer Philipp Schindler attributed the slowdown largely to currency effects and shifts in advertiser budgets, but acknowledged that AI‑driven query modes are monetizing at a lower rate than traditional searches. The company says its ad experiments in AI Overviews and AI Mode are showing promise, though the rollout remains gradual.
Analysts describe the situation as the first major disruption to Google’s core business in decades. AI is reshaping how users discover information, reducing the frequency of direct ad clicks that have historically funded the search engine.
Google argues that many AI Mode queries are incremental — additional research steps rather than replacements — and often sit at the upper funnel of the purchase journey. The firm sees these interactions as future advertising inventory once users move closer to a buying decision.
Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure
Alphabet plans to spend roughly $200 billion this year on data‑center capacity, much of it to train and serve large language models that power AI Overviews and Gemini. That spending fuels demand for high‑performance GPUs and specialized accelerator hardware. For GPU cloud providers, the slowdown in immediate ad revenue underscores a longer‑term opportunity: as AI‑enhanced search matures, the compute intensity per query will rise, creating sustained demand for scalable, on‑demand GPU resources.
