Thieves Target Nvidia-Branded Trailers, Find Only Sand Ballast

Cargo thieves hijacked two PlusAI trailers bearing Nvidia logos near Newark, California, only to discover 40,000 pounds of sand used for autonomous truck R&D testing. The incident highlights escalating risks to high-value AI hardware shipments.

PlusAI trailer with Nvidia branding recovered after theft, showing sand ballast inside

Early Thursday morning, PlusAI executives learned that two company trailers — prominently branded with Nvidia logos — had been stolen from a warehouse yard in Newark, California. The thieves had broken hand locks, hitched their own tractors, and driven the units away, likely expecting to find crates of GPUs or other data-center silicon.

Instead, each trailer held roughly 20,000 pounds of sand. PlusAI uses the weighted ballast to simulate real-world payloads during autonomous-driving research and development. The company's actual tech-enabled cabs, housing the compute stacks and sensor suites, remained secured inside the facility.

Why it matters for GPU and AI infrastructure

The episode underscores a broader trend: organized cargo theft rings are increasingly targeting high-value electronics bound for AI data centers. In August alone, multiple escorted shipments of server-grade equipment were hijacked in California, with millions of dollars in hardware still unrecovered. For cloud providers and hardware buyers, the risk extends beyond insurance claims — delayed or lost shipments can stall cluster deployments and model-training schedules.

PlusAI recovered both trailers with the full sand load intact by Thursday afternoon, and Fremont police have opened an investigation. No arrests have been announced. Nvidia declined to comment on the incident.
