Shopify Launches Canvas: AI‑Driven Store Builder Powered by Sidekick
Shopify’s new Canvas tool lets merchants create and edit online stores through natural‑language chat with its AI agent Sidekick, seeing live code‑rendered previews that update in real time.

Shopify introduced Canvas, a site‑building experience that replaces the traditional drag‑and‑drop editor with a conversational interface. Merchants simply tell Sidekick what they want—add a banner, change a colour, rearrange a section—and the AI agent edits the underlying theme files instantly.
As Sidekick makes changes, Canvas renders the actual store code in real time, so users can interact with buttons, test animations, and view responsive breakpoints without leaving the chat window. The tool also captures screenshots of the current view to give Sidekick the same visual context the merchant sees.
Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure
Running an AI agent that continuously edits live theme code demands low‑latency inference and GPU‑accelerated workloads, especially when many merchants work concurrently. This highlights the growing need for performant AI inference hardware in e‑commerce platforms.
Canvas joins a wave of AI‑powered builders from Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer, but its tight integration with Shopify’s theme architecture gives merchants a unique path to launch stores without writing code or hiring developers.
