Runware Targets Car-Style Mass Production for AI Data Center Pods

AI infrastructure startup Runware plans to scale its Romanian factory to 30 MW of modular data center capacity per day by 2028, aiming to deploy pods in 48 hours and outpace GPU lead times.

Runware modular AI data center pod on factory assembly line

Runware, the AI infrastructure company behind the Sonic Inference Pod, is moving beyond modular design into full-scale factory production. The startup aims to assemble its pre-fabricated data center pods on an automotive-style production line at its Romania facility, targeting a throughput of 30 megawatts per day by 2028 — roughly one gigawatt per month. At that rate, annual output would match the entire U.S. data center power additions projected for this year.

The company already operates one pod-building factory and is completing a second, expected online early next year. Runware says build time per pod will shrink from three weeks to a single day as the line ramps, with on-site installation and commissioning completed within 48 hours. Customers can supply their own GPUs or rent compute directly from Runware, paying a monthly fee for the pod and operations while power and connectivity are billed separately.

Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure

GPU lead times remain a primary bottleneck for AI deployments. Runware’s model inverts that constraint: its pod delivery window is shorter than current GPU shipping schedules, giving its in-house hardware team time to tailor power, cooling, and rack integration to each new chip generation. For buyers, this means faster time-to-train without waiting for custom build-outs.

Execution risk is real. The EV startup Arrival serves as a cautionary tale of factory-scale manufacturing that failed to achieve cost parity. Runware has raised over $60 million to date, including a $50 million Series A last December, and plans a Series B to fund the production ramp. Its cost structure — vertically integrated design, standardized pods, and a single production site — will be tested as volumes climb.
