Replit Drops Anthropic as Default Model, Chooses OpenAI Instead
Replit has switched its default AI model for the Agent feature from Anthropic’s Claude to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, citing cost, partnership strength, and performance benchmarks.

Replit’s Model Shift
Replit announced that OpenAI’s ChatGPT has become the default model powering its Agent feature, replacing Anthropic’s Claude which previously held that role.
CEO Amjad Masad explained the change was driven by a mix of cost considerations, partnership strength, and internal performance benchmarks that showed ChatGPT outperforming Claude on tasks like building applications from scratch.
Although Anthropic models remain available for users who manually select them, the default shift is expected to lower Replit’s spending on Anthropic because most customers stick with the preset option.
From an infrastructure perspective, the move highlights how model choice directly influences GPU workload patterns, as different models exhibit varying compute demands and latency profiles.
