Open-Source Tool RemoveMacAI Reclaims 12GB+ by Stripping Apple Intelligence from macOS
A new command-line utility lets Mac users permanently delete on-device AI models, disable Apple Intelligence features, and block future downloads — freeing significant storage with a single command.

An open-source command-line tool named RemoveMacAI has emerged to give macOS users a one-click method for purging Apple Intelligence components. The utility disables Siri enhancements, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension, and all summarization features, then deletes the underlying foundation models — approximately 12 GB on most systems, though some report up to 35 GB — and prevents macOS from re-downloading them.
Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure
On-device AI model footprints are becoming a capacity planning factor for any organization managing fleets of Apple silicon machines. As vendors push larger local models for privacy and latency reasons, storage pressure on endpoints grows. Tools like RemoveMacAI illustrate a rising demand for granular control over which AI workloads reside locally versus in the cloud — a consideration that directly impacts GPU cloud provisioning and hybrid AI architecture decisions.
The developer notes that the changes persist across macOS updates, and a removemacai revert command restores all features if needed. A removemacai status subcommand reports the size of each individual model, giving IT teams visibility into the exact storage reclaimable per device.
Apple removed the single master toggle for Apple Intelligence in macOS 27, scattering controls across multiple Settings panes and Screen Time. RemoveMacAI effectively restores that centralized off switch, reflecting a broader tension between platform-driven AI integration and user autonomy over local resources.
