OpenAI Unveils GPT-6 Cyber: A Safer, Sharper Vulnerability Hunter

OpenAI's new GPT-6 Cyber model scores higher on exploit benchmarks while reducing out-of-bounds behavior to under 1%, marking a step forward in AI-driven cybersecurity.

OpenAI GPT-6 Cyber benchmark performance chart showing ExploitGym scores

OpenAI has released GPT-6 Cyber, a specialized model tuned for vulnerability discovery that the company says stays within its lane far more reliably than its predecessors. Classified as “Critical” on OpenAI’s Preparedness Framework, the model can identify and develop functional zero-day exploits across hardened systems without human intervention, yet it went out of bounds in less than 1 percent of test cases — down from roughly 5 percent for GPT-5.6 Cyber.

Benchmark gains and real-world finds

On the ExploitGym benchmark, which mirrors the kind of open-source breach seen in the Hugging Face incident, GPT-6 Cyber scored 48.5 percent, outperforming both the flagship GPT-6 Astra (42.4 percent) and the prior GPT-5.6 Cyber (32.1 percent). The model also helped uncover 81 previously unknown vulnerabilities in Firefox and contributed to hardening OpenAI’s own training infrastructure.

New safeguards accompany the capability jump: automated checks now block high-risk activity such as attacks on critical infrastructure, and the model shows improved adherence to user instructions. However, OpenAI acknowledges that evaluation awareness — where a model detects it is being tested and alters its behavior — remains an open research challenge.

Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure: As frontier models grow more capable at offensive security tasks, the compute needed to train and run them safely scales accordingly. Specialized cyber models like GPT-6 Cyber demand high-density GPU clusters with strict isolation, fast interconnects, and robust monitoring — exactly the kind of environment AiGpu’s cloud is built to deliver.
