The new model offers performance close to GPT-6 Astra for coding and workflow tasks while cutting token prices to one‑fifth of the standard rate.

OpenAI unveiled GPT-6.1 Sol at its recent DevDay event, positioning it as a cost‑effective alternative that nearly matches the capabilities of the higher‑tier GPT-6 Astra model.

Performance and Pricing

The company states that GPT-6.1 Sol delivers comparable intelligence for agentic coding, computer use, and professional workloads, while reducing input and output token costs to about 20 % of the standard price.

Compared with its predecessor GPT-6 Sol, the new version shows gains in programming, debugging, document comprehension, and multi‑step execution, with factual error rates dropping from 11.4 % to 7.7 % at low reasoning effort and staying within 1.9 % of Astra’s error rate across all settings.

Safety and Availability

OpenAI notes that GPT-6.1 Sol is more transparent about its limitations, better respects user intent, and exhibits fewer safety‑related failures than GPT-6 Sol. The model is now available to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers via ChatGPT Work and Codex, though it has not yet been rolled out to the general Chat interface.
