MIT Libraries Leadership Reinforces Open Scholarship and AI-Ready Infrastructure

MIT Provost Anantha Chandrakasan announced that Chris Bourg, who has led the MIT Libraries since 2015, has been appointed vice provost and Barbara K. Ostrom (1978) Director of the Libraries. The new title is backed by an endowed gift from alumna Barbara K. Ostrom, ensuring the position’s longevity.

Under Bourg’s leadership the libraries have prioritized digital access, equitable scholarly publishing, and expanded support for data‑intensive and computational work. She co‑chaired the MIT Working Group on Scholarly Content and Generative AI and served on the Ad Hoc Committee on AI Use in Teaching, Learning, and Research, helping shape campus policy around AI‑generated content.

These efforts directly affect GPU‑driven AI workflows. By opening up research articles, datasets, and pre‑prints, the libraries supply the raw material that fuels model training, while advocating for licensing terms that let researchers reuse content without legal friction.

For AI infrastructure providers such as AiGpu, this means a steadier stream of high‑quality, openly licensed corpora that can be fed into GPU clusters, reducing the cost and time required to curate training data and accelerating innovation across the industry.
