Meta Suspends Muse AI Sharing Feature After Design Flaw Exposes Private Conversations
Security researchers discovered that Meta's Muse AI assistant generates shareable links with predictable patterns, allowing unauthorized access to thousands of private conversations containing sensitive business and personal data.

Meta has suspended the conversation-sharing feature in its Muse AI assistant after security firm Claroc demonstrated how a fundamental design flaw made private user data trivially accessible. The issue stems from how Muse constructs shareable URLs — instead of using cryptographically random identifiers, the service generates links with enough structure that passive DNS enumeration can reveal them at scale.
Claroc researchers identified 6,800 active share links through a single passive DNS query. Sampling just a few hundred exposed executive recruitment notes from a frontier AI lab, internal revenue reviews marked for CEOs, loan applications with requested amounts, bank fraud alerts with partial account details, real-estate portfolio performance data, and company-wide vacation calendars listing dozens of employees.
The vulnerability highlights a recurring tension in generative AI products: the rush to deploy collaborative features often outpaces the threat modeling required for data that users treat as confidential. Muse launched with claims of being "built from the ground up for privacy and security," yet the sharing mechanism lacked basic unguessability guarantees that have been standard practice for decades.
Why it matters for GPU and AI infrastructure
For GPU cloud providers and enterprises running inference workloads, this incident underscores that model capabilities are only half the equation. The surrounding application layer — authentication, data retention, sharing controls, and audit logging — carries equal risk. Infrastructure teams should treat AI assistants as data processors subject to the same segmentation, encryption, and access-review policies applied to databases and object stores.
