Jun Kim Joins Hugging Face to Advance MLX and oMLX

Hugging Face is giving the MLX ecosystem dedicated leadership as oMLX creator Jun Kim joins the company to strengthen local AI tools for Apple Silicon.

Jun Kim will lead oMLX development while supporting the wider MLX community at Hugging Face.

Hugging Face announced that Jun Kim, creator and maintainer of oMLX, has joined its team. Kim will continue leading oMLX while benefiting from dedicated resources and broader coordination across the local AI ecosystem.

MLX is Apple’s open framework for running machine learning workloads locally on Apple Silicon. oMLX will remain available under the Apache 2.0 license, with stability and faster development expected as priorities.

Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure

Local inference on Apple Silicon can reduce dependence on cloud GPU capacity, particularly for prototyping and workloads that fit within the platform’s unified-memory constraints. oMLX aims to accelerate the path from a Transformers model definition to a reference MLX implementation that multiple inference engines can consume, giving buyers more flexible deployment options.

Hugging Face also plans closer work with mlx-lm, mlx-vlm, LM Studio, and other projects, while upstreaming improvements where appropriate. The appointment signals growing investment in open, locally executable AI infrastructure and the long-term maintenance it requires.
