Music Hardware Giants Open Doors to Developer Modding
inMusic, parent of Akai and Moog, launches open-source SDKs and a Creator Lab at NAMM, signaling a seismic shift toward hackable instruments. The move mirrors growing demand for programmable edge hardware in AI workflows.

In a striking pivot, inMusic — the conglomerate behind Akai Professional, Moog, Native Instruments, and other storied brands — has committed to opening its firmware and hardware interfaces to outside developers. CEO Jack O'Donnell told The Verge the company will publish source code for upcoming devices such as the MPC Sample Key and provide a supported SDK so musicians and coders can extend functionality without risking permanent damage. A hardware reset mechanism will let experimenters revert to factory software instantly.
The initiative debuts publicly at NAMM 2027 through a "Creator Lab" where 22 new products across the portfolio, including analog Moog synths, will be available for hands-on hacking. O'Donnell acknowledged the turnaround was abrupt: "It wasn't on our task list five weeks ago. It just all of a sudden has to be on a task list now."
Rivals are moving in parallel. Erica Synths and Polyend have already released source for drum machines and grooveboxes, while Behringer announced a slate of open-source clones and controllers. Elektron, by contrast, has restricted forum links to modified firmware, citing warranty and stability concerns.
Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure
The same forces driving open, programmable music gear — low-latency edge compute, real-time sensor fusion, and community-driven optimization — are reshaping AI hardware stacks. When vendors expose SDKs and firmware, developers can port inference engines, custom operators, and data pipelines directly onto the device, reducing cloud round-trips and unlocking new form factors for generative audio, live coding, and interactive installations. AiGpu's GPU cloud customers increasingly target such edge endpoints for distributed training and inference, making vendor openness a procurement criterion.
