IBM Granite Switch 4.1 Unifies Chat, Decisions, and Speech on a Single GPU Endpoint

IBM's latest Granite Switch 4.1 models combine general-purpose decision adapters, a safety-focused Guardian adapter, and the fastest ASR on the OpenASR leaderboard into one 8B/30B model that fits the same VRAM footprint as the base model.

IBM has released Granite Switch 4.1, a modular model family that lets a single hosted endpoint handle natural-language chat, structured decision-making, and speech-to-text transcription without swapping models or provisioning extra GPUs. The 8-billion and 30-billion parameter variants each bundle three activated LoRA adapters—a general decision adapter, a safety-specialized Guardian adapter that beats several closed-source baselines, and the Granite-Speech-5.0-Turbo-CTC encoder that currently tops the OpenASR leaderboard—while consuming roughly the same VRAM as the underlying base model alone.

Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure

Because the adapters share the base model's KV cache, switching between a chat turn, a policy-compliance check, and an audio transcription incurs near-zero memory overhead. IBM's upstream contributions to vLLM further accelerate low-rank adapter inference, so a single GPU can serve mixed workloads that previously required a fleet of specialized models. For teams running RAG pipelines or real-time voice agents, this translates into lower hardware costs, simpler deployment, and predictable latency.

The release also ships with Granite Libraries, a growing catalog of task-specific adapters that developers can mix and match to build custom Switch models. In a head-to-head test, a Granite-Switch-4.1-30B equipped with four specialized adapters completed a five-step RAG workflow faster than a comparable 27B parameter competitor using only a single generic decision LoRA, demonstrating that adapter composition can outperform monolithic fine-tunes on both speed and accuracy.

Enterprises can download the pre-packaged 8B and 30B checkpoints from Hugging Face today, or compose their own variants by selecting adapters from the Granite Libraries registry. The models are licensed for commercial use and include a live Speech-to-Decisions Space that showcases real-time transcription, summarization, and 15 configurable safety flags running on a single endpoint.
