Hugging Face Embraces Native TPU Support via TorchTPU
Hugging Face announces native PyTorch support for Google TPUs through TorchTPU, eliminating the need for torch_xla and enabling seamless model deployment on TPU hardware.

Hugging Face has integrated native TPU support into its ecosystem through TorchTPU, a new PyTorch backend that treats Google's Tensor Processing Units as first-class devices. Until now, PyTorch users relied on torch_xla, which introduced lazy tensor execution and complex debugging. TorchTPU removes that friction: models from the Hub load directly onto TPUs with a simple device_map="tpu" argument in Transformers or pipe.to("tpu") in Diffusers.
Why it matters for AI infrastructure
TPUs excel at large-scale matrix math, making them attractive for training and high-throughput inference. By adding TPU as a native PyTorch backend, TorchTPU lets teams use existing PyTorch workflows — eager mode, torch.compile, distributed training — without maintaining a separate code path. Installation on a TPU VM is a single pip command that pulls the CPU-only PyTorch build, avoiding the heavy CUDA dependency.
The integration spans Transformers, Diffusers, and the Kernels library, covering LLMs, image generation, and custom operators. For organizations evaluating accelerator options, this lowers the barrier to running workloads on Google Cloud TPU pods, from single chips to thousands of interconnected devices.
