Google Updates Privacy Policy: Gmail and Photos Data May Fuel Targeted Ads

Google's revised privacy terms now allow personal data from Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos to inform personalized advertising when users enable AI‑driven personalization features.

Google has amended its privacy policy to permit the use of content from Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos for personalized advertising, provided the user has linked those services to AI‑powered personalization tools such as Search's Personal Intelligence feature.

The change adds an exception to the previous blanket prohibition on leveraging private communications and media for ad targeting. Now, when a user opts in to let Search or Gemini apps access their Workspace data for richer AI responses, that same data may also inform the ads they see across Google properties.

Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure

  • Enterprises running large‑scale AI workloads on GPU clouds must assess how vendor privacy policies affect data residency and compliance.
  • If training or inference pipelines ingest user‑generated content, the downstream use of that data for advertising could trigger regulatory scrutiny.
  • Clear contractual boundaries and data‑processing agreements become essential when integrating third‑party AI services that share data with advertising ecosystems.

Users who prefer to keep their communications out of ad models can disable Personalized Recommendations or disconnect specific apps via the Search Services Personalization settings page.
