ChatGPT macOS Vulnerability Highlights AI Application Security Risks

A recently patched flaw in OpenAI's ChatGPT macOS app could have allowed attackers to access chat logs and execute commands, underscoring the growing attack surface of AI software.

Security researchers at the Objective-See Foundation have disclosed a vulnerability in the macOS version of OpenAI's ChatGPT application that could have been exploited to compromise user data and system access. The flaw, patched by OpenAI on September 25, resided in a trusted script interpreter component that accepted untrusted scripts, allowing malicious code to bypass signature verification checks and interact with the main ChatGPT process.

According to Objective-See analyst Patrick Wardle, the exploit was "insanely trivial" — requiring roughly a dozen lines of code — and could grant attackers access to chat histories, browser sessions, and the ability to execute commands with the privileges of the ChatGPT application. The vulnerability demonstrates how AI agents, which require deep system access to function, become high-value targets when their trust boundaries are flawed.

Why it matters for GPU and AI infrastructure

As AI applications proliferate across endpoints, the security of the software stack becomes as critical as the underlying hardware. Enterprises deploying GPU-accelerated AI workloads must account for application-layer vulnerabilities that could expose proprietary data, model outputs, or inference pipelines. Hardening the software supply chain — from model serving frameworks to client applications — is now a core infrastructure requirement.

Wardle plans to present additional findings on AI macOS application vulnerabilities at the Objective by the Sea conference in November, including a patched flaw in Meta's Muse AI assistant. The pattern suggests a broader class of risks as AI assistants gain deeper OS integration.
