OpenAI Adds Native GIF Creation to ChatGPT with Images 2.6 Upgrade
ChatGPT now generates animated GIFs from prompts or photos, with frame-level editing and speed controls. The Images 2.6 model also accelerates image generation as weekly volumes surpass 4 billion.

OpenAI has rolled out native animated GIF creation inside ChatGPT, powered by its new Images 2.6 model. Users can now prompt the chatbot to produce a GIF — for example, “make a gif of a cat dancing” — or upload a photo to animate. The interface lets creators adjust playback speed, step through individual frames, and export the result in a single workflow.
Faster generation at massive scale
Images 2.6 also delivers quicker image synthesis across ChatGPT and the API. OpenAI reports more than 4 billion images generated per week, up from 3 billion in September, underscoring the surging compute demand for generative media. Two new API variants, GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst, target higher throughput and quality for developers embedding image generation in their own applications.
The update is available to all ChatGPT and Codex users on web, desktop, and mobile. By unifying still-image and animation pipelines, OpenAI reduces the need for external tools and streamlines content workflows for marketers, designers, and developers alike.
Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure: Billions of weekly generations translate directly into sustained, high-density GPU workloads. Cloud providers running inference at this scale need low-latency, high-throughput GPU clusters — exactly the infrastructure AiGpu provisions for AI teams in the Middle East and beyond.
