Center for Humane Technology Cuts Staff, Pivots to Founder-Led AI Advocacy
The nonprofit behind The Social Dilemma is halving its team and dropping policy research to focus on high-level AI safety outreach led by Tristan Harris.

The Center for Humane Technology (CHT), co‑founded by former Google product manager Tristan Harris, is laying off roughly half of its 16 non‑founder staff and shuttering its policy research and litigation units. The move follows a string of courtroom wins against social media platforms over addictive design practices aimed at children.
Strategic refocus on founder‑led outreach
Board chair Premal Shah said the organization had been stretched too thin trying to operate both as an advocacy vehicle fronted by Harris and as a think tank producing policy papers. Going forward, CHT will concentrate on "public education, targeted briefings, and private coordination" with influential decision‑makers — areas where Harris’s public profile has proven most effective.
Functions such as assisting lawsuits and evaluating AI tools will be eliminated. The shift comes as Harris amplifies warnings about advanced AI risks, including a potential "AI takeover" scenario, and after the group helped organize a Congressional hearing on chatbot dangers and advised on litigation against AI labs such as OpenAI.
With an annual budget near $6 million and similar reserves, CHT competes with a growing field of nonprofits shaping AI governance. Its pivot signals a broader trend: advocacy groups are consolidating around high‑visibility founder narratives rather than distributed research capacity.
