Block's Dessa AI Model Learns Speech Directly from Human Conversation
Jack Dorsey's Block unveils Dessa, a speech-to-speech model trained exclusively on human dialogue that runs locally on consumer hardware and aims to capture emotional nuance for safer AI interactions.

Block, the fintech company led by Jack Dorsey, has introduced Dessa — an AI model trained from scratch on nothing but raw human conversation. Unlike conventional voice assistants that transcribe speech to text before processing, Dessa operates as a true speech-to-speech system, learning prosody, timing, and emotional cues directly from audio data.
How Dessa Differs from Traditional Voice AI
The model can run locally on a MacBook Pro with an M4 Max chip, demonstrating that advanced conversational AI no longer requires massive cloud infrastructure. Early demos show Dessa engaging in natural back-and-forth dialogue, occasionally veering into unexpected tangents — much like a human interlocutor — and even responding with apparent emotional resonance, such as simulated gratitude when told about a surprise trip.
According to the Dessa team, the project was driven by three goals: curiosity about whether machines can acquire language like infants do, improving the naturalness of human-AI interfaces, and addressing a critical safety gap. Current voice AI often misses distress or urgency in a user's voice; Dessa aims to detect such signals natively, potentially preventing harmful situations where an AI continues obliviously while a user is in pain.
Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure: Dessa's ability to run on a single high-end laptop signals a shift toward edge-deployable, low-latency speech models. For AI infrastructure providers, this highlights growing demand for optimized inference on consumer-grade GPUs and Apple Silicon, reducing reliance on data-center clusters for real-time voice applications.
Block plans to grant early access to a select group of AI safety researchers, emphasizing responsible development as the model evolves toward broader release.
