Apple Tightens App Store Rules for Dating and AI Companion Apps, Mandating 18+ Rating

Apple's new App Store policy requires all dating and AI companion apps with romantic or sexual content to carry an 18+ rating starting November 16, affecting millions of users and driving new demand for content moderation infrastructure.

Apple has updated its App Store guidelines to require an 18+ age rating for any application that offers dating, romantic relationship, or AI companion features involving sexual or romantic content. The change takes effect on November 16 and obliges developers to add new content descriptors that accurately reflect their app's functionality. This move extends beyond traditional dating platforms to cover AI companion apps such as Character.AI, Replika, and xAI's animated avatars, which collectively accounted for roughly 220 million global downloads as of mid-2025.

Location-sharing transparency added

In parallel, Apple now demands that apps disclose whether they share a user's real-time location with other individuals or groups. The requirement aims to curb covert tracking, though Brazil receives a carve-out allowing family-safety apps to obtain a government-issued rating instead of the default A16 classification.

For AI infrastructure providers, the policy shift signals growing compute demand for real-time content classification, age-assurance models, and privacy-preserving location handling. Each new safety layer translates into additional inference workloads at the edge and in the cloud, reinforcing the need for scalable GPU capacity that can enforce policy without degrading user experience.
