Anthropic Grants METR Researchers Employee-Level Access for Independent AI Safety Review

Anthropic has enabled six METR researchers to operate inside its facilities with the same laptops, workspace, and internal tools as its own risk assessment teams, allowing an unrestricted evaluation of its frontier models and safety protocols.

Anthropic announced that it is giving six researchers from the nonprofit METR employee‑level access to its internal systems, including company‑issued laptops, office space, and the same risk‑assessment tools used by its own staff.

The arrangement mirrors the practice of placing resident examiners in large banks, allowing METR personnel to receive information from Anthropic employees as they would from a colleague working on alignment risk.

Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure

Independent, transparent safety reviews help build confidence in frontier models, which directly influences decisions about GPU procurement, cluster sizing, and deployment pipelines for AI workloads.

By relinquishing the right to block METR’s publications (except for narrow redactions such as customer data or privileged communications), Anthropic sets a precedent for external oversight that can drive higher standards across the AI hardware ecosystem.
