Anthropic Updates Claude Code to Prevent Game IP Infringement
Anthropic has modified Claude Code's system prompt to steer the AI away from recreating specific existing video games, while still allowing original game development. The change reflects growing attention to IP compliance in AI-assisted coding.

Anthropic has quietly updated the system prompt for Claude Code on its Opus 5.5 model, adding explicit guidance that the AI should not recreate specific existing video games. The move comes as AI-generated decompilations, recompilations, and ports of retro titles proliferate across developer communities.
According to a screenshot shared on X and confirmed by Anthropic's Addy Osmani, two sentences were added: one encouraging original games, genre-based projects, and user-designed assets; the other prohibiting recreations of named titles. Osmani stated the update aligns with Anthropic's usage policy against IP infringement.
Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure
Policy guardrails like these shape how foundation models are deployed on shared compute clusters. When providers enforce usage constraints at the prompt level, it reduces the risk of downstream legal exposure for both the model host and the infrastructure operator. For GPU cloud platforms, this means clearer compliance boundaries and more predictable workload profiles — original creative tasks versus potential IP‑violating replication jobs.
The distinction also matters for resource allocation. Training or fine‑tuning models to respect such boundaries requires curated datasets and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), which consume significant GPU hours. Infrastructure providers that understand these governance layers can better size capacity and advise customers on compliant workloads.
Anthropic indicated it will continue iterating on the prompt to strike the right balance. Developers who find their legitimate projects incorrectly blocked are encouraged to report false positives directly to the company.
