Android Rolls Out AI‑Powered Scam Protection in Google Messages
Google adds an opt‑in enhanced protection mode that uses cloud‑based Gemini models to evaluate unknown senders in Messages, plus on‑device Gemini Nano checks for malicious links.

Google is expanding its scam‑defense toolkit for Android with a new “enhanced protection” setting in Google Messages. The feature is opt‑in and leverages cloud‑hosted Gemini AI to analyze the intent of conversations with unrecognized contacts, complementing the existing on‑device detection.
According to Google, scammers often hide behind prolonged, low‑pressure dialogues. The cloud analysis runs in an encrypted, isolated environment that neither Google nor any third party can access, preserving user privacy while spotting novel attack patterns.
On‑device link scanning
In addition to cloud evaluation, the enhanced mode activates Gemini Nano on the handset to inspect unfamiliar URLs in real time before the user opens them, flagging potentially malicious links without sending the content to the cloud.
Broader rollout includes blocking unauthorized call‑forwarding attempts, alerting users when such changes are requested, and automatically masking sensitive data during screen‑sharing sessions in Chrome and Android WebView. The chat‑notification scam detector, previously limited to Pixel devices, is now expanding to handsets from Honor, Motorola, Oppo, OnePlus, Realme, Tecno, Vivo, Xiaomi and others, targeting hundreds of millions of users.
