Akai Opens MPC Sample Key to Community Mods and AI-Assisted Firmware

Akai's upcoming 37-key MPC Sample Key ships with open-source firmware and an SDK, inviting developers to extend the platform with custom synths and operating systems — many built using AI-assisted coding tools.

Akai MPC Sample Key 37-key controller with open-source firmware

Akai is preparing to launch the MPC Sample Key, a 37-key variant of its budget-friendly MPC Sample, with a notable twist: the firmware will be open source from day one. The company has already seeded early units to a community of developers who are building custom synthesizers, virtual analog engines, and even entirely new operating systems for the hardware.

Short videos shared by Akai demonstrate mods that integrate Native Instruments Massive, FM synthesis, and other sound engines — several of which were prototyped using AI-assisted coding workflows, sometimes referred to as "vibe coding." CEO Jack O'Donnell confirmed that inMusic plans to extend this open approach across its brands, releasing SDKs and opening more software to external contributors.

Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure

The MPC Sample Key story illustrates a broader shift: hardware vendors are treating firmware as a platform, not a black box. Open-source firmware combined with AI-accelerated development cycles lowers the barrier for domain-specific acceleration — whether that's real-time audio DSP, inference at the edge, or custom control planes. For teams building GPU-backed AI infrastructure, the same principles apply: open stacks, community-driven extensions, and tooling that lets developers move from idea to deployed workload faster.
