Agentic AI Takes the Helm at Allen Telescope Array in Hunt for Extraterrestrial Signals

NVIDIA Holoscan powers real-time, agent-driven signal processing at the Allen Telescope Array, compressing weeks of analysis into hours and achieving the first live AI detection of a pulsar.

Scientists at the Allen Telescope Array in Northern California have deployed an agentic AI stack built on the NVIDIA Holoscan platform to accelerate the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The system lets researchers steer antennas, calibrate instruments, and run inference on incoming radio streams through natural-language prompts — turning what once took weeks into hours.

Terabit-Scale Processing at the Edge

Radio telescopes produce terabits of data per second. Holoscan’s DAQIRI library streams that firehose directly into GPU memory, while the SETI Institute’s CyberEther framework leverages CUDA-X libraries such as cuFFT and cuBLAS for real-time signal math. Orchestrated by the Nexus web console, the pipeline sustains 2.4 Tb/s on NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs deployed on-premises beside the array.

Early results validate the architecture: the pipeline delivered the first real-time AI detection of the Crab Nebula pulsar, a rapidly spinning stellar remnant. The team is now evaluating NVIDIA Nemotron models for latency-critical workloads where data locality and rapid turnaround are paramount.

Why it matters for GPU / AI infrastructure: This deployment showcases a full-stack, agentic workflow — sensor ingest, accelerated compute, and LLM-driven orchestration — running deterministically at the edge. It demonstrates that modern GPU clusters can close the loop between raw instrument data and autonomous scientific decision-making without cloud round-trips.
